What’s Next for optical Interconnects

The Litrinium team is applying its domain expertise to some of the most challenging applications in the networking field.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

Litrinium was founded to address ultra-high-speed interconnectivity applications in markets where legacy approaches face fundamental market shifts that require new ways of thinking. Resource-heavy AI training approaches today are driving a complete rearchitecting of the computing, storage, processing and interconnection models that tomorrow’s machine learning systems will require. The AI market has reinvigorated the semiconductor startup sector as incumbents and OEMs face infrastructure challenges that were unimaginable a decade ago. A new generation of intelligent processors will be introduced in the coming years, with new server and chassis designs, new power requirements, new rack and cooling schemes, new storage links, and a much higher tax on network connectivity for real-time applications. New data centers are being built exclusively to serve the needs of machine learning and deep learning innovators.

AI applications are fueling an explosion in compute capability which will require even faster connections. Litrinium anticipated this shift and has designed a new ultra-fast interconnectivity platform that is eco-centric and enables faster time to market for next generation AI innovators.

5G Wireless INFRASTRUCTURE

Blazing speeds, ultra-low latency and a massive increase in the number of simultaneous users are just some of the many promises of 5G. But before its full potential can be unlocked, many technological challenges will need to be solved over the next decade. Regulators around the world are determining how best to allocate the appropriate spectrum assets to realize the vision of 5G. And with frequencies ranging from sub-6 GHz to millimeter wave (mm Wave), infrastructure OEMs will need to accommodate redesigned network topologies featuring massive MIMO antenna designs, a wide variety of base station formats and innovative new transport solutions.

Litrinium has assembled some of the brightest analog designers and engineers in the world to invent smart, tunable, ultra-low-power physical layer solutions optimized for 5G front-haul, mid-haul and back-haul optical interconnectivity.

DATA CENTER CONNECTIVITY

The world’s insatiable demand for bandwidth is fueling continuous upgrades in physical networking architectures to maximize compute-power, storage capacity and access. Data centers are scaling up and scaling out to address content-rich cloud-based services and applications which are overwhelming the network. This continuous expansion will result in frequent infrastructure upgrades. The emergence of artificial intelligence, machine learning, computer vision and a host of low-latency visual and video communications services is driving an explosion in data traffic which demands breakthrough speeds for inter- and intra-datacenter connectivity.

At blazing speeds, the laws of physics demand super-sophisticated signal integrity solutions to ensure seamless interconnectivity. Litrinium was founded to solve the significant signal integrity challenges posed by ultra-fast optical interconnects that will light up hyperscale data centers over the next decade.

Internet of THINGS

With tens of billions of connected devices, IoT will have a profound impact on both wired and wireless networks. The evolution to 5G wireless will give rise to a ‘massive’ Internet of Things with dedicated bandwidth and seamless connectivity. As new wave wireless architectures develop, network planners and standards bodies are defining solutions to address the rise in data traffic, requiring a new approach to interconnectivity. Enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB), Ultra-reliable low-latency communications (URLLC) and Massive machine-type communications (mMTC) will collectively deliver the next wave of IoT applications across the widest spectrum of industries.

As an unprecedented volume of IoT devices are deployed, data connectivity characteristics will tax global networks in unexpected ways. High reliability, low-latency networks will require innovative signal integrity solutions. Litrinum’s unique approach to eco-centric design and performance tunability will accelerate deployments in this sector.

VIRTUAL AND AUGMENTED REALITY

As Web 3.0 development begins, the lines between computer-generated and real-world digital experiences will begin to blur. The Spatial Web promises a new landscape made up of three-dimensional AR and VR web spaces. Some will be found in digitally-mapped physical environments and some will be found in freshly-coded virtual ones. The intersections among VR-enabled massively multiplayer online gaming (MMOG), collaborative medical imaging, AR-enabled architectural design, and real-time training simulations meet at a point which mandates high-capacity broadband networks with ultra-low latency. These experiential business sectors are expected to fuel another great data explosion that will significantly tax global networks. While >80% of all network traffic expected to be generated by video, gaming and multimedia, virtual and augmented reality traffic is also expected to increase by 12x in the years to come. At the same time, the commencement of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics will kick off the era of 8K video, a 4-fold increase over 4K UHD.

As data rates increase, it becomes infinitely more complex to reliably transmit data from one point to another. The laws of physics will require super-sophisticated signal integrity solutions. Litrinium’s DNA in signal integrity uniquely positions us to deliver high speed interconnectivity solutions that will accelerate mass market AR and VR applications.

FIBER-to-the-home

The emergence of 10Gbps asymmetric and symmetric PON have not come without a struggle. Deployments are the tangible result of many years of development among standards bodies, cooperation among technology rivals and service providers and the availability of cutting-edge semiconductor solutions. Though they are not yet common offerings from service providers, advances in fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) network topologies have already exposed the limitations of previous signal integrity approaches. A new approach to physical layer interconnectivity is mandatory to realize massive 10G optical deployments. OEMs are demanding best-in-class performance at price points that can light up hundreds of millions of potential FTTH subscribers.

Litrinium is building revolutionary 10G-and-beyond FTTH solutions that enable customers to achieve unprecedented performance at price points that will catalyze mass deployments around the world.
